About SRC

With the recent developments of information processing and network communication, the needs for information storage has been increasing. The Storage Research Consortium (SRC) was established in 1995 to enhance the growth and technical vitality in information storage industry.  The SRC membership consists of around 10 supporting corporations and around 50 research members from universities and government organizations.

Information storage is supported by multiple breakthrough technologies covering a wide range of research area from materials science to signal processing. The SRC is now serving to foster the collaboration among members of different research area to develop breakthrough HDD technologies to achieve the areal density of 4 Tb/in2 (4000 Gb/in2) by organizing and managing high-risk, pre-competitive, and cooperative research projects. The SRC is also investigating the technologies feasible to realize the ultra-high areal density of 8 Tb/in2. The followings are the major activities of the SRC.

(1)  Supporting of information storage-related research in universities and government research organizations.

(2)  Funding scholarship to doctoral students in information storage-related area to be promoted to the industry members.

(3)  Holding technical review meeting twice a year and topical technology meeting several times a year.

(4)  Developing and publishing the breakthrough HDD technologies and roadmaps toward 4 Tb/in2.

(5)  Preliminarily investigating feasibility of the HDD technologies to realize 8 Tb/in2.
